Upon Further Investigation

Upon Further Investigation
Oil Paintings by Jiang Jian

Curated by Nikki Schiro

Jiang Jian is an artist from Chengdu, China. He most often works in black and white, as for him it most reveals clarity of form. Jiang works in a unique methodology, layering black and white oil paint and then creating an image by scraping away layers of paint with a razor blade. Upon Further Investigation focuses on Jiang's paintings of hair cowlicks. Each blade of hair is meticulously carved out of the surface of the canvas to collectively reveal something of a finger print, another face, that lives at the top of our heads.

"It may be that we've never really paid attention to our own swirls, that intriguing, beautiful "other face" that lives on the tip-top of our head. This type of beauty does not have standards, but remains independent, abstract. Yet, it's something we all share, a demonstration of our lives--despite its mystery, wildness, and attraction"--Jiang Jian

The photos of the artwork were documented by Jason Mandella. The artwork will be on view thru July via appointment with the artist.

Finding Ganesh a series that collectively shapes a contemporary fairytale, touching on cultural gaps of globalized society. The story is set in India on the last day of Ganesh Chaturthi festival, and reflects on the recent gang rapes, lack of cultural empathy/understanding as well as the Gulabi Gang (female activists in Uttar Pradesh).
